The Silk Road: Oasis Cities & Desert Landscapes

This is a journey of long distances and distinct regional identities. A good route chooses a coherent corridor instead of trying to cross the whole northwest in a few days.

This is a journey of long distances and distinct regional identities. A good route chooses a coherent corridor instead of trying to cross the whole northwest in a few days.

Choose a corridor

One approach focuses on Gansu, combining Lanzhou-area connections with Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang. Another centers on Xinjiang with Urumqi, Turpan and Kashgar. Combining both requires substantially more time and transport planning.

Art, archaeology and landscape

Give controlled-access cultural sites their own planning priority. A cave-art appointment may determine the order of a day. Leave desert viewpoints for the more comfortable light and temperatures rather than treating the hottest hours as default sightseeing time.

Pack for the setting

Sun protection, drinking water, layers and comfortable closed shoes matter even on a trip built around vehicle transfers. Desert and mountain conditions can differ sharply within the same journey. Keep essential supplies in your day bag.

Avoid invisible travel days

Mark every flight, train and long road segment on the itinerary before adding sights. A destination with two nominal nights may offer only one usable day. Check the current feasibility of regional access and excursions with the operator before payment.

Put the idea into your journey

Use this chapter to set priorities before choosing dates, hotels and transfers. Explore the related destination and compare a sample itinerary; then ask for a route that reflects your interests and comfortable pace.
