Combine a coastal city stay with the communal architecture and agricultural landscapes of inland Fujian.
Five or six days
Spend three nights in Xiamen for waterfront walks and an island day. Add one or two nights inland if tulou villages are a central interest. An overnight gives you more room than a very long out-and-back road excursion.
Look beyond the building outline
A tulou visit is richer when you understand how shared courtyards and domestic spaces work. Ask which buildings are inhabited and which areas welcome visitors. A respectful visit leaves doorways clear and does not enter private rooms without permission.
Island logistics
Confirm the correct ferry terminal and your actual ticket before departure. Keep the island day free of a tightly timed onward connection. Comfortable shoes are more useful than a plan that assumes vehicle access to every lane.
Choose depth over mileage
Two thoughtfully selected villages can show meaningful differences in layout and setting. Trying to see every famous complex in one day can produce more driving than exploration. Discuss the walking surface, slopes and heat with your planner.
Put the idea into your journey
